Cold Weather Brings the Parking Ban

ParkingBanLYNDON - As the cold weather draws closer and the possibility of snow is just around the corner, the town of Lyndon would like to remind people of the winter parking ban.  The parking ban goes into effect November 1st and this year the town is taking extra time to promote awareness so that citizens are prepared. "I always like to make it clear that the ban goes into effect halloween night at midnight, until April 15th," town administrator Justin Smith told us.  These specific dates are easier to communicate to the public than having to do so on a storm by storm basis.  "There is no good way to let all of the people in the village know when we are going to need you off of the streets on a given night."

The parking ban has been in effect for years according to Police Chief Jack Harris, but available parking spaces continue to be an issue.  "There are a lot of apartment buildings downtown that don't have adequate parking off street for their residents," Harris said.  "So once the parking ban goes into effect, some of the landlords expect them to fend for themselves."

The town is working to get the word out so people have plenty of time to prepare, which hasn't always been the case previously.  "We feel like last year we didn't do a good job of getting the message out there ahead of the date, so we are going to use the rest of this week and next as the time to get this information out to the public," Smith told us.

Smith also added that because the town is giving the public time to prepare, there will be no leniency this year and towing will happen.  "We have to have to streets free of cars because we can't go weaving in and out of them.  We understand the frustration people feel of having to find parking off of the street, but businesses and people going to work rely on our ability to get the streets clean."

Lyndon has a 5 year contract with Aces Towing, and Harris says the company has have free reign to tow anytime between the hours of midnight and 7AM, and the cost of towing could increase from last winter depending on what Ace's decides to charge.
