LYNDON – Added to Victory Media's 2014 Military Friendly schools list as one of the top 20 percent of colleges embracing the education of this nations veterans, Lyndon State College is set to complete it's third phase of the Veterans Memorial Park.
Organized by the Student Veterans of American, phase 1 of the Veterans Park project brought the official lettering and star design to the wall behind Fountain Pond back in the summer of 2012, and as a tradition that's been built on ever since, was officially dedicated on Veterans Day Summit 2012. Phase 2, which was dedicated on Veteran's Day Summit 2013, was the installation of a granite bench that overlooks the memorial park and Fountain Pond.
The installations were made possible by donations from members of the Lyndon State College community, and now, after months and hard work and gathering resources, phase 3 is set to be installed this Veterans Day. Phase 3 is a series of brass plaques with the names of current Lyndon State College students as well as alumni on them – in no particular order.
After the first plaque goes up this Veteran's Day, the Veterans Club in association with the Student Veterans of America, plans on adding another plaque each year. That means that, even if a name that they wanted to put on the wall doesn't make it up, there's still time, and room, for more.
Which is a good for the project, because it has had good reception since it was introduced. Thom Anderson, advisor to the Student Veterans Club, said "Initially we were thinking 50 names...now it might be more like 75."
Student and Alumni Veterans were just asked to provide DD214 papers, which are papers that prove discharge, to Thom so that they can be submitted and engraved. Thom also took time to go through alumni records and found that they have their work cut out for them with over 600 alums that have connection to the military.
Accompanying the Wall of Honor is the Virtual Wall of Honor which, when it is put up, will be found on the Lyndon State College Alumni website. The Virtual Wall of Honor will also include the names of students still on active duty.
Club President of the Student Veterans of America, Heather M. Morris said "...the virtual wall will be more organized and up to date." Morris also added that they will be able to add names to it anytime.
The official date for the installation is November, 11th during the Veteran's Day Summit.
