Lyndon – Northeast Kingdom residents had the opportunity to visit twenty different cultures from all over the globe right in their own town of Lyndon this past Sunday. Thanks to Lyndon Institute’s Multicultural Festival, students educated the public on various countries’ customs and lifestyles; using ethnic clothing, food, and games to keep the learning fun.
Lyndon Institute Luca Gubric is thankful to have the chance for everyone to talk about their home countries.
“There is a lot of diversity in our school,” says Gubric. “So on this the one day we can show that we have to present and it’s a nice way to talk about our countries.”
Countries like China, Germany, the Bahamas, and Spain were just a few of the many places students spoke about.
“My favorite one is Switzerland because of all the chocolate,” says Hayden Angell, a participant in the festival.
With over three hundred attendees, the festival was a hit for the public and the students alike, making the event a success for the seventh year in a row.
Lyndon Institute student, Pablo Cortadellas, is passionate about this event for it’s educational value.
“I want people to know about my country because there are some things about Spain that are really important and people don’t just figure that out,” says Cortadellas.
Despite the fact that participation in the festival is mandatory for students, they enjoy it as well.
“Well it’s nice when someone asks you about your country,” says Gubric. “You can present it in the way you see it.”
One of the proudest administrators of the event is Rick Angell, the Director of Residential Life at Lyndon Institute.
“I think it’s a great thing,” says Angell. “We can talk about global awareness and global citizenship, and the festival brings twenty different cultures to the Northeast Kingdom. The kids are really excited to share what they have from home: their foods, their dress, their attire, and their customs. I think people today are really interested in what the kids have to share.”
Angell says the students look forward to the event every year.
