Looking for Unlicensed Dogs

puppyLYNDON - The search is on for pet owners who have not yet licensed their four-legged friends this year. The town select board, along with the Lyndonville Police Department and animal control are working to seek out all unlicensed dogs.

About 100 dogs who were licensed last year have yet to be relicensed this year. The state of Vermont requires that every dog be licensed by April 1st, and each dog is re-licensed every year, with proof of vaccination every three years.

The town sends out letters to homes, puts notices in the town reports, and advertises this in local newspapers. After April 1st, those who have not licensed their dogs, but had a licensed dog the previous year, will receive a letter reminding them. After about a month, the town usually sends out a second notice, and the pet owners are charged a 50% penalty.

If dogs still remain unlicensed, the select board issues a warrant to the chief of police and an animal control officer. The police department will then go door to door asking pet owners who did not re-license their dogs to do so within the week. If they do not comply after seven days, animal control will impound the dogs until the owner provides documentation of vaccination and licenses their dogs.

The cost of licensing a dog between January 1st and April 1st is $9 if they are spayed and neutered, and $13 if they are not. Between April 2nd and and December 31st it costs $11 for spayed and neutered dogs, and $17 if they are not.

To license your furry friend you can print and fill out this form and mail it to the town clerk at the address listed at the bottom of the sheet.
