LYNDON - A new law heading to Vermont this summer created quite the discussion at the Lyndon Town School for this year's town meeting.
In efforts to reduce landfill waste, trash collectors will be charging per unit rather than a standard rate. The state is hoping the law will encourage people to throw away less and recycle more.
Before getting down to business, residents had a moment of silence to honor Select Board Member, David Dill. Dill passed suddenly February 26th, days before Town Meeting Day. He was the community’s first municipal administrator and took on multiple leadership roles in his community leading up to his death; including being Director of the Lyndon Area Chamber of Commerce.
Lyndon voted to put the recycling law into effect on June first of this year, even though the law will not be implemented statewide until a month later
Lyndon Municipal Administrator, Justin Smith says, “That's going to be a new system for people in our town to get used to is that they're going to pay by volume and thats something thats going to take some time to get the information out there."
In addition to the new recycling law discussion, voters passed a $25,000 funding request to repair damages to the local pool.
"I think it was great voter support from the community for the local pools. Repairs on the Powers Park pool are set to begin in August and are hoped to be finished before the 2016 swim season begins," said Chris Thompson of the Village Improvement Society. “I think they realized that it's a program we're investing in for the long term,” says Thompson.
The Lyndon community passed the school budget 162-79, as well as passed next years town budget unanimously.
