LYNDONVILLE - The Northeast Kingdom has seen over two feet of snow within the last two months. This has been causing some problems for the Lyndonville Fire Department, who is asking residents to help dig out their fire hydrants.
"If you have a fire hydrant and you have time to go shovel it out, it would help tremendously," said Division Chief, Butch Forget. "We need the water to put out the fire."
Large snow banks and snow drifts have caused many of the hydrants in the downtown area to be hidden and difficult to access. A barn fire that happened just yesterday is the reason the Lyndonville fire department is reaching out.
"If we run out of water, then we try to secure some from other towns tankers," said Forget. "Here in the village we have hydrants and if we can get them shoveled out then that's what we'll use."
The fire hydrants should be shoveled out by at least three feet and include a path from the hydrant to the sidewalk. A fire can double in seconds, and in most cases having a hydrant available could mean the difference between losing or saving the building.
