NEK Schools Given Improvement Status

AROUND THE NEK - Local schools in the Northeast Kingdom are not meeting the requirements set by the No Child Left Behind Act.

The act requires schools to make adequate yearly progress in order to reduce achievement gaps. If a school does not meet the standards for two consecutive years, the school must enter school improvement status.

Barnet Elementary School, Burke Town School, Danville School, Lyndon Town School, Miller's Run School, and Sutton School are all currently under improvement status.

The improvement status is no surprise to the principals of the schools who all met on Wednesday.

"This assessment plan has been laid out from the beginning. So if we haven't reached it yet, we have to do more," said Sutton School Principal, Roberta Stradling.

Sutton School is currently under improvement status in reading and math.

"We maybe need to start thinking a little more outside the box as to the length of time and amount of support we're giving to those students that are on the cusp," said Burke Town School Principal, Stacy Rice.

The National Educators Association has expressed the opposition to tNo Child Left Behind stating that it is an unbalanced, one-size-fits all system.
