deer seasonAROUND THE NEK - Next weekend spells the end of this year's deer hunting season, and this year has turned in a good haul.

Representatives of the Village Sports Shop in Lyndonville, and of Barnie's Market in Concord, both agree that this year's rifle season has produced good numbers. During the course of the season the Village Sport Shop has kept a list of all the deer killed during this year's rifle season. The largest reported deer by Village Sport Shop was killed by Keith Newland of West Burke, hauling in an eight point, 240 pound deer.

Fish and Game wildlife biologist Cedric Alexander says that the total number of deers killed this season is higher comparative to last year. In fact, rifle season has seen a 88% increase in number of deer killed. While muzzle loader season has just started there has already been a good tally of deer killed.

When talking about the numbers he has recieved, Michael Chadburn, the owner of Barnie's Market says that, "I think last year we checked in about 75 during rifle, maybe 15 to 20 during muzzle loader. This year we checking in over 85 during rifle. Muzzle loader's just started, I think we might have five reported."

Muzzle loader season began this past Saturday. With this week's muzzle loader season getting underway it also coincides with this year's second and final bow and arrow season for deer hunting.
