ST. JOHNSBURY - Many people from all over the state get into hunting every year. Some people do not feel comfortable with handling guns but Derek Murphy a hunter safety instructor said "there is nothing to be afraid of, it is a tool and if the tool is handled properly its going to be a fun opportunity for them."
Many Vermonters take to the wood during the year for many different opportunities to get the game of their choice. In order to keep this sport safe the Fish and Wildlife Department often put on hunter safety courses.
These courses cover everything from gun safety to basic orienteering to survival. This course is for hunter young and old in order for them to learn the importance of being safe in the wood.
These courses are put on all over the state and since they began in the state of Vermont in 1958 hunting accidents have decreased 86%.
Murphy says " I actually didn't grow up hunting my neighbor when i moved up to Vermont many years who happens to be our chief instructor took the time to share the passion of hunting with me."
