high taxNORTHEAST KINGDOM - State Representatives in Vermont have voted to add $27 million in new taxes across the state.

Local representatives are on the fence about how they feel about the raise.

The tax increase will be on cigarettes, smokeless tobacco, room and meals. The three new taxes are on bottled water, clothing over $110, and candy including soft drinks.

State Representative Robert Marty Feltus did not for the tax increase because, "The tax increases are supposed to fund the budget and the budget proposed was too high," Feltus said. "The budget could have been cut back and therefore the tax increases could have been cut back or perhaps even eliminated."

State Representative Bob South couldn't agree more with Feltus saying, "When you live on the edge of the Connecticut River and when you're looking at soda tax, or cigarette tax, and different taxes proposed, all this is basically going to do is drive people across the border to New Hampshire."

Michelle Faye who is a new State Representative in the Caledonia- 3 shared a more positive outlook on the tax increase. "Nobody likes raising taxes, nobody, but we don't wasn't to leave elders out in the cold, and we don't want to not feed our kids, so we do what we have to do."
