There is 1 open seat in Caledonia District 1, and there’s 2 running candidates.
Republican Incumbent Debra ‘Debbie’ Powers and Democratic candidate David Tucker.
Debbie Powers, while in office, serves as the clerk of the house committee on Health care. She’s sponsored many bills that aid with health care access and local economic development. She, like many candidates in Caledonia County, is a strong advocate for reducing the property tax burden that many Vermonter’s face. She supports Vermont’s agricultural heritage and supports its local farmers.
Debbie has the endorsement of Governor Phil Scott, as well as the NRA Political Victory Fund.
David Tucker, a democrat, seeks to take the seat away from Debbie Powers. His campaign is focused on affordability. With the rising cost of fuel, groceries, electricity and insurance, he hopes to protect NEK Vermonters from the “Everyday Squeeze” He intends to pursue legislation on keeping the state government accountable for its spending, and protecting heating and fuel assistance programs. He is committed to lowering property taxes by shifting education funding towards a system based on ability to pay, as well as addressing real cost drivers for school budgets. He supports local schools and will fight to protect town tuitioning and ensure efficiencies in the new Cooperative Education Service Area.
He plans to make owning a home easier for everyone, not just prospective buyers, by making cuts to unnecessary regulation, making it easier for Vermonters to build their own homes, providing incentives to repair and renovate vacant lots as well as supporting down payment help for first-time buyers.
David will also fight for universal primary care, to help expand access to healthcare, as well as take on administrative waste and drug company profits. He wishes to preserve the working farms and small businesses that make up the NEK while also giving small and rural communities a voice.
David has endorsements from the Vermont Progressive Party, the Let’s Grow Kids - Action Network, the Vermont State Labor Council, as well as the VPIRG.
