Peacham Residents Want Answers

peachamPEACHAM - Peacham tax payers are going to want an explanation at this year's town meeting day.

The town says that over the past five years, or even further back, almost nine thousand dollars has gone missing from the Peacham transfer station's budget.

Just after last years town meeting is when it was noticed that the figures did not match the transfer stations records. Immediately following the mismatched numbers, town auditors and the Vermont State Police launched an investigation. The investigation is ongoing and nothing has surfaced yet.

"We just don't know. We're assuming that there was indeed some theft, and since that time recommendations have been made by the auditors and the state police as to security measures that we should establish and put in place to keep this from, obviously, ever happening again," said Bruce Laferty who is Peacham's town clerk and treasurer.

These adjustments in security are now in place. Lafferty added that the leak has stopped and that tax payer should once again feel safe about their money. As for the money that has already gone missing, it's a different story. "It is my responsibility and so I have taken the responsibility for that," Lafferty says,"And for the lack of control in terms of that particular financial piece of town business, but I will let you know that it wont happen again." Lafferty still believes this will be a big discussion topic in this years town meeting on March 5th.
