AROUND THE NEK - Hoping to raise awareness about homelessness in the NEK, several groups have joined together to create a set of events, called Housing First, to shed light on the homeless issue in the Kingdom. Newport, Lyndonville, and St. Johnsbury will all be holding events simultaneously starting at 4 p.m.
Candle light vigils start tonight at 5:30 p.m., including stories from those who have been or still are homeless. After the vigil participants are invited to spend the night at the event outside, to experience what being homeless is like. The goal of tonight isn't only to raise awareness about the issue of homelessness, but to show that it can affect anyone, including those in the NEK. It's also to illustrate how homelessness affect people beyond the obvious.
"What we've discovered is there isnt any particular one face to homelessness, it can be children it can be family it can be elders," said Emily Keith, a member of Rural Edge, one of the groups
