farm1NORTHEAST KINGDOM- The history of Vermont is rooted in it's farms and scenic lands. Thanks to The Vermont Land Trust, the preservation of this historic state has become easier.

For over thirty-seven years, the VLT for short has had a helping hand in conserving over half a million acres of Vermont's farm lands. This includes over nine hundred farms, which have been operated by innovative farmers who are committed to the future of farming and the local food economy.

This opportunity the VLT has created is helping provide to willing farmers, and a little help from an aspiring young farming couple. The farming couple is from a local farm in East St Johnsbury and they will be able to see a new light when it comes to farming.

What was once known as the "Locust Grove Farm", located in East St Johnsbury, has been known by many locals for years. Located on 35 acres of beautiful farming land, and known for it's iconic red barn with "Locust Grove" written on the siding, many locals can expect to see it around for a little bit longer.

Thanks in part to Susan Monahan and Hisa Kominami, the farm may be open as soon as June of this summer.

The couple was able to purchase the land through the trusts Farmland Access Program, with a little assistance from the Vermont Housing and Conservation Board.

According to Susan and Hisa, and mentioned on the Vermont Land Trust's site, "We're planning to expand our markets and connect with the community through a vegetable and flower CSA with weekly distributions at the farm, as well as planning to build a more permanent farm stand in the beautiful old dairy barn and be open Wednesday's through Sunday's starting in June."

Because of opportunity that farmers have through the Vermont Land Trust and their Farmland Access Program, the historic farms and forestland will be around for years to come.
