BARNET- Girls on the Run is a national organization that has been making headway at local Vermont schools. According to it’s website, Girls on the Run “is a non-profit organization dedicated to creating a world where every girl knows and activates her limitless potential and is free to boldly pursue her dreams.”
Girls on the Run is a development program, that uses physical activity for girls in the third through eighth grades, and Vermont has it's own chapter. The website says, “the goal of the program is to unleash confidence through accomplishment, while establishing a lifetime appreciation of health and fitness.”
Locally, Barnet School is utilizing the program to help get their girls more interested in exercising, and to help them both mentally and emotionally.
“Every week we explore a lesson, whether it’s exercising, eating healthy, having a positive attitude, or even taking care of a charity that we are raising money for or doing service for,” said school exercise instructor Stephanie Giese.
Every day for 14 weeks, the students will incorporate exercise and a new life skill into their routine, that they will later need as adults.
"It doesnt matter if your the fastest or just a complete walker, you could walk every lap and your very much stiill a part of the group and member," said Barnet parent Cindy Mosedale.
The girls will get to put all of their newly learned skills to the test when they compete in a 5K race in Essex on June sixth.
