Sutton Budget Declined

SUTTON- A previously shot down school budget in Sutton is in the works to be presented again later this month. The Sutton School board had to cut $30,000 from its proposed $2.7 million dollar budget after it was defeated at last weeks town meeting.

One of the main reasons why the budget was defeated had to do with the fact that the school board agreed to buy out former principal Roberta Stradling's contract. Stradling left the school last thanksgiving after a co-worker accused her of assault. The co-worker, who also has a child at the school, insists that she was assaulted behind closed doors after asking for additional help for her son. Police found no evidence of the assault and no witnesses came forward.

Stradling agreed to leave her post quietly if the school board would pay the remainder of her $77,600 yearly salary.
This deal was met with a lot of opposition at the yearly town meeting.
Resident Susan Cheney led the outcry stating "I'm tired of paying her salary."
To make the cuts needed on the budget, the school board has reduced the hot lunch program by $17 thousand dollars.
An information meeting is scheduled for March 18th, with the second vote happening March 28th.
