Locals Speak on David Dill's Passing

dillLYNDONVILLE- A former selectman and active member of the Lyndon community was remembered this past weekend at the First Congregational Church in Lyndonville. David Dill, who passed away February 26, touched many members of the community and they reflected.

"We all learned lessons in terms of how to look to the future, how to plan for it, how to be prudent and slow about what you're doing," said fellow selectmen Marty Feltus. "But nevertheless, have a long term goal and I think that was very informative to not only members of the board of selectman and the board of trustees in the village, but to the regular town staff."

Dill was active in local, state, and federal governments. He spent time working in the Office of Secretary of Defense in addition to being active in the Air Force.  In 1990, David and his wife Vicki found their way to Lyndon.

"You could always count on him," said Cheryl McMahon of the Lyndon Area Chamber of Commerce. "When he said he was going to be there, he would be there, roll up his sleeves, and do whatever needed to be done."

Dill was hired as Lyndon's first municipal administrator, a position currently held by Justin Smith, before he became Director of Maintenance for the State Agency of Transportation. Not long after that, former Governor Jim Douglas appointed Dill to be Secretary of Transportation.

"He came to this community," Feltus said. "He didn't grow up here and his wife has told me that he generally just loved the town and loved the state and wanted to do what he could to give back."

Among the projects Dill completed, some of the major ones included a new water treatment system, the expansion of the Cobleigh Library, and repaving of village streets.

"He will be very missed in the community," said McMahon.
