Hunters Breakfast 2014

HuntersBreakfastThumbWALDEN VT.-Saturday was the first day of hunting season in Vermont, and what better way to kick it off than with a New England tradition. Hunters Breakfast is a New England tradition that dates back decades. Unfortunately it is tradition that is dying out. George Peak, the owner of Cole Pond sledders Shack, says "there are less [Hunter's Breakfasts] than there used to be".

That isn't stopping him from keeping the tradition alive. For four years Peak has been supplying hunters and sledders with great grub.

" It's a destination if you will, you're mingling people who are doing what you love to do, so it's a lot of." says Peak. Peak and his two other volunteers love doing the breakfasts. Whether it be mingling, cooking, or even cleaning, the crew at the sledders Shack have a good time.   "We have a lot of fun with it, basically we have to be having fun, because it isn't finically rewarding."

The lack of profit is just one of the many reasons so many towns have stopped putting on the breakfast. Where almost the entire state participated, now only a handful of Vermonters participate.  One volunteer believes it has to do with a lack of help, "The hard thing is finding volunteers. people just don't volunteer like they used to".  Peak doesn't see an end in site though. "As long as we can do it, we're going to continue to do it".

The shack officially opens for business in January, weather permitting.
