Soccer Playoff Round-Up

SoccerAROUND THE NEK- As the cold weather approaches, high school soccer playoffs start to heat up. 60 games were played between Tuesday and Wednesday around Vermont for the first round of playoffs.
Some teams are looking at deeper playoff runs, while others are starting to talk about what they have to improve on for next season.

 In Division I boys soccer, 8th ranked St. Johnsbury played an impressive game against 9th ranked Spaulding on Wednesday. The Hilltoppers scoring was led by Senior Natzu Friebel, who scored the games last two goals, making the final score 5-2.The Hilltoppers will travel to South Burlington to take on the 1st ranked Rebels on Saturday, in the quarter final match up. The boys at Lyndon Institute were hoping for the best as they took on 3rd ranked Essex on Wednesday. The Vikings were 3-9-1 on the season, and will have to prepare better for next season as they lost 0-4.

In other division match-ups, the Oxbow Olympians lost to 1st ranked Lake Region 5-0 for Division III and in Division IV boys soccer, BMU lost to Craftsbury 4-0 and 10th ranked Danville lost to 7th ranked Whitcomb 3-1.

For girls soccer action, in Division I, the lady Hilltoppers from St. Johnsbury lost to 4th ranked Burlington 2-0. The girls from Lyndon Institute played on Wednesday afternoon and also lost 0-3 against Woodstock in the Division II match-up. Wrapping it up in Division IV, the 9th ranked South Royalton Royals took on 8th ranked Danville Indians on a windy Wednesday afternoon in Danville. The Royals went into halftime with 1-0 lead, but Jackie White tied up the game in the second half scoring on a penalty kick. The Royals fired back to score another goal, leading to the upset and sending South Royalton into the playoffs. They play 1st ranked Arlington on Saturday.

In other Division IV match-ups, the BMU Bucks were blanked by Mount St. Joseph 7-0, and Concord was also blanked by 6th ranked West Rutland 8-0.

The St. Johnsbury Hilltoppers are hoping to make the NEK proud when they take on South Burlington High School, Saturday at 2:00 P.M in the Division I Quarterfinal.
