White Nose Update

Bats

The verdict is in. White Nose Syndrome, a disease that is deadly to bats, is still going strong, and spreading. This comes after a confirmed case of White Nose Syndrome in a cave in Missouri, a full 300 miles from the closest infection in Tennessee.

If more cases of White Nose Syndrome begin to affect more of Missouri's Grey Bats, then the infection could spread even further west at an alarming rate.

Vermont Fish & Wildlife's Scott Darling, who is a Wildlife Biologist, tried to re-populate two caves in Windsor County Vermont this past winter, but claims, "It appears that the fungus could be transmitted from the mine or cave environment to bats", making human efforts to saving the bat population seem worthless.

Even bats in Canada are being wiped out from the disease. Quebec has recently reported infections in two locations and the syndrome is continuing to spread west into Ontario.
