Work Camp Benefits Senior Center

The Senior Action Center decided that they needed a garden to be built so that residents could grow produce in the Center's yard. Many new gardens spring up this time of year, however this one was constructed by workers who want to give back to the community.
The project was funded by a grant from AmeriCorps, and the raised garden beds were built by inmates from the St Johnsbury Work Camp. Americorps received a large financial boost on Tuesday courtesy of the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act signed by President Obama. The Act will allocate 5.7 million dollars to AmeriCorps over the next six years, and allow the service organization to hire new employees, expand volunteer opportunities, and fund more projects like the senior garden.
Participants in the St. Johnsbury Work Camp feel that their work is a good "eye opening" experience and positive alternative to serving jail time. Correctional officials believe the program ultimately saves taxpayers money and envision growing the program in the future. Officials have said that even with the State's budget shortfalls and the pending closure of the Northeast Regional Correctional Facility the work camp will remain open.
