VT House and Senate Legalize Same-Sex Marriage

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009

After a much anticipated wait, Vermont is now the 4th state to legalize same sex marriages.

Earlier this week, Governor Jim Douglas vetoed the bill and less then 24 hours later, the House and Senate overrid the Governor's decision.

Vermont was the first state to legalize civil unions for same sex couples and now follows Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Iowa in allowing those same sex couples to marry.

Vermont is the only state out of the four to legalize same sex marriages through the legislature.

A two-thirds vote was need by both the Senate and the House to override the Governor's Veto.

The Senate overrid the vote quite easily with a 23 to 5 vote in favor of the bill while the House just barely approved it with a 100 to 49 vote.

Hundred of supporters gathered outside the House's Chamber until the final deicison was made.

Couples will have to wait until September 1st to offically become married in Vermont.
