The federal government is releasing a wealth of stimulus funds to boost the economy, but in order for the idea to work someone needs to spend the money. The Vermont League of Cities and Towns decided to ask Vermont towns what they would use the money for. The result was a list of municipal infrastructure projects hoping to be funded with stimulus money. So far this list totals over $1 billion dollars in improvements, and the list is still growing. The town of Lyndonville only submitted one project, that is to improve the waste water treatment facility. The total cost of this project is only $4 million. St. Johnsbury on the other hand submitted a list containing 16 projects totaling just about $54 million, projects including repairing streets and bridges, and even renovating their welcome center. No one is sure yet which projects will be approved to get funded, or even when. The Vermont League of Cities and Towns feels that this list should bring to light the growing problem of Vermont’s aging infrastructure.
