Vermont State College Funding Among the Worst in the Country

Friday, February 13th, 2009
Currently Vermont State Colleges are among the worst in the country when it comes to state funding.
This is one reason Governor Jim Douglas called for a review of the higher education structure between Vermont State Colleges and the University of Vermont last Thursday.
Douglas suggested that by limiting spending in public schools they can free up as much as 16 million dollars that could go then go towards state colleges.
However, even with the proposed 20 percent increase in state funding, college officials say this would only be the tip of the iceberg.
Furthermore, this is not the first time this has been looked into…
“This was looked at by a State Senator from Windsor County, Frank Smallwood I believe, in the 1970’s and for some whatever reason didn’t go anywhere in the Legislature. So maybe it’s time to take another look at it,” said Stephan Morse, Chair of the Vermont Higher Education Task Force.
As of now, no decisions will be made until a five person task force shares their findings to the Governor by November 15, 2009.
