Train Derails in West Burke
Monday, February 9th, 2009
WEST BURKE- A Clarendon and Pittsfield train derailed late Monday morning in West Burke after hitting an icy stretch of track near an intersection with Route 5. The freight train left Newport and was destined for St. Johnsbury. The train was not transporting harzardous cargo and there were no reported injuries. A representative from the Vermont Rail System said that ice is a huge problem in the winter after a warm spell. The tracks do get salted by either the town or the state, but traffic crossing the tracks on Route 5 often pushes slush and water onto the rails which then freezes. Drainage has been reported as a problem in these areas and the Vermont Rail System says it could be improved.
