National Library Week

Thursday, April 16th, 2009
In 1957 a joint committee made up of American Library Association members and the American Book Publishers Council came together and suggested to have the first National Library Week, this event was held on May 16th though 22nd with a theme of “Wake Up and Read”.  This annual event has continued ever since, this year, April 12th though 18th marks National Library Week with a theme of “Worlds Connect at your Library”, whether it’s a public, school/university, research/special, or governmental library.  Library week is an annual celebration of the contributions of our nations libraries and librarians, and Vermont is no exception libraries have been celebrating this annual event for nearly fifty years now.  Wednesday the 2009 banned books list was released, this list includes titles such as “To Kill a Mockingbird” and the Harry Potter novels.  Michael Roche of the Department of Libraries explains a little more on this national event.  Although National Library week is dwindling down, you can still catch a poetry reading and book signing by poet Galway Kinnell at the St. Johnsbury Athenaeum on Thursday evening.
