Gas Taxes

Prices at the pump are much lower then they were this time last year.  But the cost to fill your tank will soon be on the rise, not because of the price of crude oil but rather due to a tax increase.  Vermont legislature voted to increase the tax on gasoline and diesel fuel from $0.19 to $0.24.  The extra five cents a gallon is being slated to go towards State roads and highways.  Officials in Montpelier hope to raise $120 million for this fund.  The bill only address the increase in the fuel tax and remains unclear as to whether or not town roadways will receive funding from the taxes or if the tax will disappear after the $120 million goal is reached.
