Vermont Congressmen on Health Care

Two Vermont legislators made their way to the Northeast Kingdom this weekend and weighed their opinions on how healthcare will change America.

President Obama signed the second piece of health reform legislation earlier this week at a Community College in Virginia.

President Obama said "the debate on health care has gone on for generations and I'm glad and gratified that we we're able to get it done last week."

The bill passed the senate in December and Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders voted in favor of the bill.

Sander said, " we are spending almost twice as much on healthcare as any other nation. That is devastating to our economy to small business to our international competitiveness. Some eight hundred thousand people go bankrupt every year because of medical related illnesses so I think that the time is long overdue. We brought major reform to healthcare this doesn't do everything I would like it to."

Just last week the bill squeaked by the House of Representatives, and Vermont Representative Peter Welch also voted in favor.

"I think this health care is important first step but I think we have to see it as that a first step it moves us in the right direction. In my view. But we've got to be willing to make corrections as we go along so this affordable and accessible. "

The bill will free up around sixty eight billion dollars for college loans and deficit reduction. 40 -billion dollars will be sent Pell Grants over the next ten years. Obama said the bill would cut out the middleman for students.

"What's gotten overlooked in all the hoopla all the drama last week. Is what happened in education? When a great battle pinning the interest with the banks and financial institutions against the interests of students finally came to an end."
