Stirring Up the Water

Barnet residents gathered during town meeting to decide if $70,000 worth of tuition should be used towards the school's operating budget for the 2011 fiscal year.
School board member Shannon Larocque said, "With it being a very difficult budget year we felt that it was prudent to use that money or request the town to allocate the use of that money to reduce the tax rate from approximately 10 cents to 7.5 cents."
Even with the new found money, some residents were concerned that programs we're still going to be cut for the students.
Larocque also said, "Our total budget shortfall was on the order of $250,000, so even though our actual school budget was reduced through difficult means of laying off 3 positions and reducing school classroom budget to bare minimum."
Despite the hard economic times, voters approved the school budget proposal of just over four point two million dollars.
Larocque also went on to say, "The actual budget piece of that compared from last year is down about $10,000 but because of lack of revenue mostly from state sources, and because of tough issues like the general fund, education fund in the state, some of those funds that normally come to the local schools have been reduced."
The townspeople also approved giving 10,000 to The Lake Harvey Association boat wash program for boats using Harveys Lake in the summer months.
Jan Sherman, the president of the Lake Harvey Association, said, "there are many lakes in the state that have problems with milfoil so we need to be very vigilant about keeping it out."
Milfoil and other invasive species can be catastrophic to a lake. Milfoil is not an issue at this moment at Harveys Lake, and they'd like to keep it that way.
