Since moving to the Northeast Kingdom five years ago, Aine Baker has bought and rented out several properties in the area. Baker said, "I take a place like this and slowly turn it into something that's, you know, nice place to live in. We're doing painting now, we've done electrical work, we've done new windows, we've done quite a bit of work to it. It's coming around, it takes a while though."

One local student has written and published her first book at the age of 17. Jessica Newby, a senior at Danville High School, spent six months working on her senior project, a book entitled Mother Where Art Thou? The book is composed of poems inspired by her mother's heroine addiction.

The decline in overall retail sales has a direct impact on thrift stores, causing many of them to shut their doors. The Salvation Army generates over $100-million in revenue each year.  Many stores on the West Coast are shutting down; however, that is not the case here in the Northeast Kingdom.

The near extinction of several bat species in Vermont has turned a new, unsettling page. White Nose Syndrome is the name for this dangerous problem. Bats from as far North as Ontario to as far South as Tennessee have been exposed, infected, and killed by a currently untreatable and undefined epidemic.
