10th Annual Ice Fishing Derby

ice fishingWESTMORE- The 10th Annual Ice Fishing Derby has officially started today. The tournament will take place until 12 p.m. on Sunday, February 16. The registration fee is $30 and all fishermen must have a valid Vermont fishing license.

Ice fishermen from all around the Northeast Kingdom are ready to go out onto frozen lakes, despite the storm coming this weekend. Keith Abbott says, "We live in Vermont. So, we kind of have to deal with it."

For the next four days, competitors will be waking up early in the morning to stay out on various lakes all day. There are about 24 lakes in Vermont partaking in the Ice Fishing Derby.

The fish that are caught that day must be fresh and weighed in at Wright's Sport Shop in Newport. Weighing will happen during business hours from Thursday through Saturday. On the final day of the derby, fishermen will have to bring their fish to the Elks Club from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.

There will be $50,000 in prizes to give away to the winners of this tournament. There will be different fish categories and only one fish can be entered into each category.

Whichever fisherman catches the biggest first during the four day tournament will be announced the winner and presented with a cash prize of $750.
