restaruant weekVERMONT- Vermont Restaurant Week began April 22 and goes through May 1. The 10 day event brings much more to the table than food as a portion of the profits from select restaurants are donated to The Vermont Food Bank.

According to Hunger Free Vermont, 13% of Vermont households face food insecurities. While it may sound minisule, the Lyndon Area Food Shelf alone helps around 300 to 400 residents a month.

Debbie Minor of the Lyndon Area Food Shelf says those who go to the food shelf are as young as high school students to people in their 70's or 80's.

The Vermont Food Bank will receive 10% of the participation fee during Vermont Restaurant Week. The food bank directly serves food shelves in various areas across the state. The Kingdom Taproom as well as Fusion Bar and Grill are two area restaurants participating in Vermont Restaurant Week.

“Being hungry is very very bad,” says Fusions Executive Chef Julian Borje. “I mean no one should go hungry, especially in the United States.”

While winter is usually the toughest time regarding hunger in Vermont, Minor says despite the warm temperatures of the spring and summer months, the issue continues.

“It’s a year-round, fall, summer, spring, mud-season [issue]," Minor says. "It’s a 12-month problem up here."
