ST. JOHNSBURY - Major School Budget Passed in St. Johnsbury Election
This week, residents of St. Johnsbury voted on several different budget proposals, one of the most important being a $30 million school budget that provided a 13% increase in salaries for educators and also decreased the tax rate by 3 cents.
Carl Johnson/Teacher: “I make $70,000.00 and I know I’m not overpaid, I know it, and I know that schools are having a hard time finding people willing to do what I do, and I do it with cheer. I love it.”
Remarkably, the St. Johnsbury School District budget did in fact pass with a vote of 663 to 483. In fact, more than 90% of school budgets around Vermont passed their school budgets.
All of the other budget proposals also passed, which includes the General Fund Budget, the Highway Budget, and an approval for a bond which will fund a water project along Bay Street that will increase the quality of public water.
Many of the office positions remain uncontested by their incumbents.
The municipal budgets saw a 5.89% property tax increase for homes outside the Special Services District and a 3.79% increase for those within the Special Services District. The projections are to increase property taxes by $66.53 per $100,000 of home value outside the Special Services District and $71.17 per $100,000 within the Special Services District.
