Huge Upgrade In Fairbanks Museum

SAINT JOHNSBURY- The Fairbanks Museum is almost finishing their new Science Annex.  This is the biggest project the museum has been making since the 1800s. The project is estimated to be around $7 million dollars. This project has been planned for many years, but it got started in the summer of 2022. The museum has been closed since the start of the year. During its time being closed, staff and volunteers have been working to put new exhibits and redesigning exhibits, conservation and general maintenance, and cleaning after the months of construction.

The new Science Annex will be 6,500-square-foot and it will have earth and atmospheric science exhibits, an astronomy installation, and data about the building materials used in the addition's construction. There are also other pieces for the exhibits that still haven't been installed such as a fog tornado, a Bernoulli blower, and giant parabolic dishes that transmit sounds across a large space.

"It's certainly the most substantial structure to go on the building since the 1895 addition," said Executive Director Adam Kane reffering to the museum's south wing being built years after the museum's opening.

Kane also expects the Annex to be completed by June. The museum will hold its celebratory ribbon cutting for guests on Thursday, Feb 15th. The museum will be opened for a preview to museum members and donors on Friday, Feb 16th and the Science Annex will be opened to the public on Saturday, Feb 17th.
