JOHNSBURY- The Saint Johnsbury Fire Department are Santa's local helpers this year.  The department is running a Santa Fund to help children in need by providing them with Christmas presents. Toy donation boxes have been set up all around the Northeast Kingdom including at the station and Passumpsic Savings Bank they will distrubute the toys on December 21st.

"I think it's huge for people that can't afford Christmas for their children," Firefighter Ryan Pelow said. "We can help them out a little bit, get them started."

Families sign up for assitance and the department expects about 600 families to reach out this year. This drive is so important because for some people, it is the only way to give kids the Christmas they want and deserve.

"Some people rely on it every year," Pelow said and presents aren't the only thing they will be giving out this holiday. They are also supporting the elderly community here in the NEK by delievering food boxes. "So it's 'oh thank you', but when you bring a food box to an elderly women or man and they're like 'oh man this is amazing!'"

This Santa Drive is just another way that firefighters are giving back this holiday season.
