Headmaster Houck

newliheadmasterLYNDON - If you have spent any time on Lyndon Institute's campus this school year, you may have noticed a new face leading the charge. The school has a new headmaster this fall.

Daren Houck has taken over for previous headmaster, Rick Hilton, who retired this past June. Houck said that he has known of LI for years, and knew Hilton well. After going through the interview process, Houck was unanimously chosen by the board.

Houck was formerly the headmaster at The Mountain School at Winhall in Bondville, Vermont. He believes that being headmaster at LI was a natural fit, because both LI and The Mountain School at Winhall use a town-academy model. They are private schools, with a public mission.

Houck also believes he is a good fit for this position because he shares a similar philosophy and mission with that of Lyndon Institute's. His philosophy is that every student should have access to an excellent education, and that LI has a comprehenive mission, which includes technical programs, special education, and college preparation.

Houck took interest in LI not only because of its philosophy and mission, but for their long-standing tradtion. Also, when he found success in other positions, he questioned what more he could do.

"I started out as a teacher...and recognized that I could make a difference in a classroom. In a desire to do something a little bit more, could I enact change in an entire school, or an entire community?" Houck asked himself.

For his first year, Houck plans to sit back, watch, and listen to what is going on around him, so he can understand what the students, staff, and community need from him.

Houck will officially be installed as headmaster at a ceremony on September 13th, at 10 A.M.
