BURKE - Burke Town School students hit walk and roll day in full stride.
Kids walked and biked to school under the supervision of teachers instead of being dropped off or taking the bus in an effort to get kids outside and active in the mornings.
Students were dropped off about a half mile from school today as they walked or rolled their way up the street. Students were not only focused on getting outside but also learning about safety. The students and teachers have practiced walking safely on the roads said Lisa Grey, a P.E. teacher at Burke. "We pre-taught and walked the kids on trails," said Grey. "Then we walked them up a little portion of the road and practiced during P.E. class with teachers, one at the front, one at the back, we talked about whistles, if a car comes we blow the whistle you pull over and stop, let the traffic by."
While exercise and safety were on their minds, art teacher Carol Mason said they just liked being outside. "I think the kids were just excited that they were outside that time of day, getting fresh air, and seeing the water and the things growing in the spring, they were just excited to be outside, with each other too, their friends."
Burke Town School will participate in the international walk and roll day which will take place the first week in October.
