Dairy Protection Program Extends Deadline

Cow PicNORTHEAST KINGDOM - Local dairy farmers now have more time to sign up for a program that covers losses when milk prices drop and feed costs increase. The deadline to register for the Margin Protection Program for Dairy has been extended to November 20th.

The program protects farmers when the difference between the price of milk and feed costs falls below the coverage level they select.

Aside from the deadline extension, the program won't look any different than it has in the past, according to Pat Passut of the Farm Service Agency.

"It's relatively the same as last year," she explained. "They're just giving them that extra time to make a choice."

Farmers who were previously enrolled will still need to pay the $100 administration fee when making their selection.

Those interested in the program can find out more about coverage levels online and can sign up for the program at any local FSA office.
