BURKE- This past weekend, the QBurke Mountain Resort hosted it's annual Pond Skim. The event was zombie-themed and featured 37 contestants from around the region battling it out on the pond.
Contestants had to skim across the 91 foot pond on either skis or snowbaords. Prizes were given to the the top male and female surviors, as well as the best costume, best splash, and best exit.
"It was awesome," said Alyssa Cote. "It was really fun. I was really nervous, I didn't even think I would make it across the first time."
Cote particpated in the event because her father had participated for 5 years, but was unable to this year due to a back injury. In honor of him, she strapped on the skis. In addition, Cote was the winner of the best costume award.
"I took some old nurses scrubs and put dirt and blood all over them and cut them all up," said Cote.
In the male event, Ryegate resident Steve Genereaux took home the hardware, although he didn't expect to.
"It was a surprise cause I really thought there were two other guys that were very good skimmers," said Genereaux. "It was lucky."
QBurke Events Coordinator Patrick Bradley said that although there is an entry fee, the mountain doesn't make any money from the event.
"It's more of a have fun event," said Bradley. "[It's] something cool to finish off the season and we dont' really make any money off of it. It's more to just create something really cool to do for people."
QBurke is in its final week of skiing. They are set to close on April 5th.
