Food Forum

ST. JOHNSBURY-There was food for thought in St. Johnsbury at the 2012 Food Forum.

The second annual "Food Forum" was held at The St. Johnsbury House at 1207 Main Street on February 7th.  The forum was hosted by St. Johnsbury ALFA (Area Local Food Alliance) with much support from other local food organizations as well. Some of the organizations that presented exhibits to the community included The St. Johnsbury Food Co-op, the Vermont Food to Plate Initiative, and Green Mountain Farm to School/Farm Direct.

Chris Sol Cruz, a St. Johnsbury ALFA board member, thinks this alliance could be vital to the local community in the future. "We're looking to get institutions like different schools involved in the community forums to help make the farm-to-school activities in St. Johnsbury more sustainable. One of our board members is a teacher at Lyndon as well, so were trying to find ways to associate school groups with the community farm and just better ways to get more involvement and better food awareness and access for students as well as the community at large."

The goals of the 2012 Food Forum (that included many returning community members from last year) were to grow the local online farmer's market, to continue working on the farm-to-plate collaborative in schools and businesses, and to strengthen and expand their educational and outreach efforts.
