Icicles Pretty But Dangerous

BURKE - Icicles are on our businesses, homes, and schools.  They are beautiful, but are another winter danger to buildings.

Frank Green of East Burke said that it's all about the type of roof you have.  A tin standing seam roof has very little threat of danger, except for walking under the spikes of ice if they were to fall.  Homeowners like Green know all too well the problems icicles pose to rooftops and gutters.  He said, "If you do not have that specific type of roof then icicles will back the water up under the shingles and it will go down into the house, so you have to clear them away."

One way to protect buildings is to insulate them with foam.  Poor or no insulation can lead to more ice.  You should also remove the icicles as soon as they appear to stop damage and prevent future problems.
