Where is Winter?

ST. JOHNSBURY - With the total average annual snowfall of 86.8 inches in St. Johnsbury, and this year only totaling around 20 to 30 inches in Northeast Kingdom communities in December, this winter seems to be one of the mildest winters in recent years.

The lack of snow is a result of the unusually warm winter Vermont has had this year. "4.2 degrees above normal for the month. So February obviously has been quite warm. The rest of the winter has been quite warm as well," said Chris Bouchard, Meteorologist at the Fairbanks Museum.

In 1942 Vermont averaged only 42 inches of snow, making it the least snowy winter in Vermont history. Just four years ago, in 2008, was the snowiest winter on record with almost 140 inches of snow.
