Veterans Club Active In Spreading Awareness

The transition from military duty to life at home can be difficult for military veterans, especially for college students, returning from armed services.
Some difficulty comes to the college students, who are returning from military duty, when they cannot receive or are not aware of the support groups available. Proactive members in the Exercise Science major at Lyndon State College have created a new program called the Lyndon State College Veterans Club. The club is designed to raise awareness and support for active and returning military members, much like organizations such as the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign War.
Member of the Veterans Club Staff Sergeant Wells talks about his experience returning to college after his deployment. "When I got back from my first deployment, they were not really ready for military people to be coming back from deployment. It is good that we can all get together and talk. Military life is a lot different than civilian."
Specialist Nunez looks to enhance support group awareness as well. "We are trying to take donations. We are doing one dollar for 'Support Our Troops' bracelets. Basically we have had a couple of buddies who have been injured or wounded in combat and we are just trying to raise money for the Wounded Warrior Foundation."
As well as selling wristbands, the club is also competing in the Tough Mudder competition on May 7 and May 8 at Mount Snow. Willie Myers, a Tough Mudder participant explains the benefits of the competition. "It is just about beating yourself up mentally while also getting a physical workout with a couple close friends. There is no winner, it is not timed or anything. You are there for the experience but all the proceeds go to the Wounded Warrior Fund."
The Veterans Club is also planning to conduct other fundraisers in the days to come. All proceeds from the group's fundraisers are donated to the Wounded Warrior Foundation and to the families of fallen soldiers.
