Warning Customers
Caramels Tanning in St. Johnsbury is trying to warn it's customers of the risks behind UV exposure. Summer and prom season are right around the corner, and many people look to get some color. However, too much sun can cause some health risks such as skin cancer, skin burns, premature skin aging, and eye damage (both short and long term). The owner of Caramels Tanning, Cari Melkonian says, "a small percentage of my customers still over-abuse tanning. We try to talk to them about the effects of it and what not coming three times a week, year round, year after year, isn't healthy some people really are blind to the effects they are having on their skin." Due to ultraviolet light exposure tanning is a natural response to the skin. All tanning salons are regulated throughout the nation to ensure customers cannot tan more than once a day. It is the owner's responsibility to make sure customers do not burn and are responsible about tanning. For example, Caramels tanning does not allow customers to tan multiple times a day, and allows them to wait two to three days before they can tan again. According to the skin cancer foundation one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in the course of their lifetime. The benefits of tanning may include a daily dose of Vitamin D, and cutting down on seasonal depression, but the only way to stay completely safe from skin cancer is to avoid tanning salons.
