Speaking Out by Hanging Laundry

On April 15, St. Johnsbury residents assembled in Arnold Park to march along Main Street with clotheslines in hand. The march was sponsored by Umbrella and the Clothesline Project, a program that originated in 1990 on Cape Cod, MA to address the issue of violence against women. Hanging clothes on the clothesline used to be the place where women would speak openly, and thus became the theme for the movement. The clothesline project has grown over the years to the point where there are an estimated 500 projects throughout the nation, one of which cemented itself in St. Johnsbury.

Kirby Campose, the March Organizer, said, "I'm happy that it happened and I'd like to see it grow every year. So, the fact that people came and walked down the street, it made a statement. I'd say it was a success." This was the second time the march took place in St. Johnsbury. April marks sexual violence awareness month.
