Dispute Over a Position

Legislators John Morely and John Rogers visited Sheffield Tuesday morning to brief residents on major issues happening in Montpelier. This included Vermont Yankee and the current legislation to keep heavy trucks off of the town's main roads. This lead to many complaints about Route 122 in Wheelock and Sheffield.

When the voting finally began, most of the previous years' officials were reinstated. When the time came to vote for a school director for a two year term, tempers started to flare. One school director candidate, Heather Batchelder said, "I do have children in the school system. I'm a big supporter of the community working together in order for us to get by, especially during these trying times. I believe that we have to have a strong education system for our children as they are our future."

Long-time Sheffield resident Jack Simons, who also serves as the one of the town auditors, interjected stating, "The kids in this school are out of control. The woman sitting next to me said we want to get more pupils and I said I don't understand, where would you get more pupils? And she said people who are now home schooled and people in other districts. I said to myself and I said to them, but I didn't get an answer, if you can't control the ones you got what the hell do you want with more."

The voters decided that Batchedler was a better candidate for the position.
