RCT Bus Driver Proud of His Roots

Johnny Gammell
For over 14 years, one NEK resident has been quietly performing his job with little recognition. But without him, many people in the area would not be able to get to work, go shopping, or even get to the hospital.

Johnny Gammell takes his place behind the wheel of the R.C.T. bus, which he drives to many stops between Lyndonville and St. Johnsbury.

Gammell remembers his first days: "I was there the first day R.C.T. started. We started off with just small vans and we had them for or three years, and then of course it kept building up and building up before we needed busses".

His love for driving is nothing new, he says. "I love to drive. When I turned 16 I couldn't wait to get my license and I've had one ever since."

He added a commercial driver's license to his wallet, and drove tractor-trailers and ten-wheelers for over 43 years. After a year of retirement, he felt that familiar itch again.
"I took a year off and did a little hunting and fishing. But then I decided I needed something. To really enjoy life I started to look for a job and found this one here. The reason I got it was because I had a CDL."

And he couldn't be happier with his decision: "I enjoy driving. I enjoy the people, and it's a good job".
