New Supermarket for Bradford

When P&C Supermarket in Bradford closed its doors to the public in February, residents had no choice but to buy their groceries elsewhere.

The closest supermarket to Bradford was nearly half an hour away, which was a huge inconvenience for people living in the area. "Some were concerned", says Mark Johnson, from the Bradford Merchant's Association. "The merchants were very concerned when P&C closed because grocery shopping is the core aspect of people's local shopping and without a supermarket in town, it is going to force people to leave the community to do their shopping".

Irene Trivas of West Newbury disagreed and said, "I cheered. It was the absolute worst pit stop market I have ever been to. They carried nothing and they smelled, so we cheered. I did not go to the funeral".

Luckily for Bradford residents, Portland Maine-based Hannaford's bought the former P&C and plans to re-open the store in the near future. Johnson says, "We feel very strongly that it's going to be an asset to the downtown business district because it's going to mean that people can do the most of their shopping locally. Bradford has a wide variety of other services that are available in the community. It's going to save people from traveling fifteen to thirty miles away to do their shopping". Hannaford operates over 170 stores in the Northeast.
