One man's trash is said to be  another man's treasure, which is why residents of the NEK lined up in Burke this past Saturday.

Ski season is right around the corner, and it's no surprise that this sport is considered the opposite of cheap. Many people in the area are looking to make this season a little bit easier on their wallets, which is why folks were happy to attend the annual Burke Ski Swap.

"I came out here to get some boots and skis for my children and wife because I already have some for myself. This is a very expensive sport, and I want them to be able to enjoy it. This makes it affordable", said David Doucet, a skiier from Barton.

Organizers of the event made an effort to make all of the prices affordable. They assisted the sellers to help set appropriate prices, while buyers were happy to spend money towards a good deal.

"Something like this with really affordable prices allows parents to outfit their kids. Without breaking the bank, they can hopefully afford a lift ticket or a way to get them to the slopes", said Carrie Tomczyk, a resident of East Burke.

New ski packages can cost a family anywhere from 400 to over a thousand dollars each. If you add in winter clothing and other protective equipment, the prices add up quickly. Taking advantage of a ski swap helps families who are on a budget outfit their children without losing sleep at night.

"With three kids changing and growing every year, the ski swap is fabulous. Without programs like this and skiing through the school, my family wouldn't be able to ski. So we are very pleased we have this opportunity in our area", said Angela Bangs, a mother from Newark.
