A 45-year-old Lyndonville father who shot and killed his son in a hunting accident was sentenced Monday afternoon. Kevin Kadamus will not go to jail, after a plea agreement was accepted in the case.

Kadamus accidentally shot his 17-year-old son Jake last May after mistaking him for a turkey, on the first day of turkey hunting season. The community supported the Kadamus family after the tragic incident, urging prosecutors to drop charges.

However, Kadamus ended up pleading no contest this past summer to an involuntary manslaughter charge. A charge that in recent years has landed hunters in similar cases behind bars for a year.

Kadamus will be required to do 150 hours of community service and is not permitted to hunt or use any type of firearm for 10 years. This decision was based on his community efforts, and because of Vermont's individualized sentencing with court cases. The County State's Attorney, Lisa Warren, was able to explain why.
